While the movie looked decent enough from the trailer, the reactions to 65 were rather mixed. I will say that I ended up enjoying it more than most people.

I do like the concept and the setting of the movie, even if it is very familiar and doesn’t do anything particularly special with it, and really doesn’t do much beyond the bare minimum. They provide some action scenes, some slower character moments, and keep the pace up so it doesn’t drag. It doesn’t have a whole lot of depth, so fittingly it’s 90 minutes long. I was hoping for more from the movie, but I can’t deny that it does work in how straightforward and simple it is.

The movie definitely benefits from the good and committed lead performances from Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt. While the concept of a man with some tragedy/trauma having to protect a young girl has been done many times over, they have convincing enough chemistry that it works.

This is directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who made the horror movie Haunt. On a technical standpoint, 65 is okay. There are some entertaining action sequences, and even some suspenseful moments. Some of the CGI can look a little rubbery and the score is pretty generic.

65 is fairly generic and doesn’t live up to its premise, but is an entertaining enough sci-fi thriller, helped by the decent set pieces and the committed lead performances.
