Lethal Weapon is one of the most recognisable buddy cop films ever, and rewatching it, it’s for very good reason.

Lethal Weapon has pretty much the perfect buddy cop formula. So much of its success came from Shane Black’s strong script; the arcs for the lead characters are good and well thought out, the dialogue is punchy and iconic. While it is definitely very humorous, mainly with the clashing personalities of the lead characters, it does have a dark story and it lends itself to some very intense scenes. This gives the movie a good mix of everything.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are great as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh. These two are perfect pairings, distinctly different from each other, believable and likable in their roles, and most importantly are entertaining and fun to watch interact. The rest of the cast are good too, including Gary Busey as one of the villains.

Richard Donner directs this incredibly well. The action set pieces are really good, well shot and have a real manic energy to them.

Lethal Weapon remains one of the most iconic and influential buddy cop movies ever, with the great script, perfect lead performances, and solid direction. It is a classic for a reason.
