6 Underground was a Michael Bay movie that had come out recently, but I hadn’t seen yet. I had seen some very mixed reactions to it but I wanted to check it out. It’s definitely one of his most unfiltered and unhinged movies, and I kind of loved it for that reason.

The opening non stop 20 minute action sequence really sets the tone of the film as it goes through all kinds of mayhem and carnage. By the time you get to a shot of a dangling eyeball, you’ll probably figure out whether you are on this movie’s wavelength or not. 6 Underground is up there as one of Michael Bay’s most crass, vulgar, mean spirited and tasteless films, on the side of Pain & Gain and Bad Boys II at least, and I really kind of liked it for that. It really is just as well that it was released on Netflix as it got away with a lot. There is a lot of energy throughout, and it’s paced pretty well. It is also very absurd and silly, and the dark comedy really worked for me. If there’s a big issue with the movie, it’s the script. The story really isn’t anything special, just functional enough to move things forward.

The movie also has a good cast of performances with great dynamics between actors and characters, especially with the central team’s own skills and distinct personalities. Ryan Reynolds is in the lead role and is definitely in Deadpool mode, he certainly quips as if he was still playing Deadpool, but I still enjoyed him here. The rest of the cast are really good too, including Melanie Laurent, Adria Arjona, Corey Hawkins, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy and Dave Franco.

Michael Bay’s direction is distinct as ever and he’s on top form here, especially with the impressive cinematography and frenetic editing. But of course, the film shines most when it comes to its stylish and relentlessly bloody action sequences, and there are some very big action set pieces. No one directs action like Bay, and these scenes are chaotic, over the top, off the rails, and feature plenty of explosions and slow motion.

6 Underground is an unhinged, chaotic, non stop action film that’s highly entertaining despite some messiness with the writing and story structure. If you really aren’t into Michael Bay’s more unhinged and nasty side of movies like with Bad Boys 2, this definitely won’t be your thing. In fact, if you largely don’t like Bay’s movies, this is likely to be one of your least favorites of his. Even though there are definitely other films in his filmography I like more, I really enjoyed 6 Underground.
