I heard about The Blob, mainly that it was a campy B movie horror flick which got a remake in the 80s. There are definitely much better movies of this type, but it pretty much worked at what it set out to do.

The Blob is a cheesy sci-fi monster movie from the 50s and the writing very much reflects that, with it being charmingly campy (especially with the dialogue) and not having the strongest script. The titular blob monster unfortunately isn’t in the movie as much as I would like, and while the movie is fittingly less than 90 minutes long, the plot is a bit too stretched out and the pacing can be a little too slow. This can make some sections of the movie feel a little dull.

The cast are good and likable, even though the clearly adult actors attempting to play teenagers are distracting (especially Steve McQueen who otherwise makes for a strong lead).

While the movie never feels scary and is very dated, Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.’s direction is still impressive in some areas. Despite having a low budget, the movie works a lot with what it has. The special effects are impressive for the time, kind of a mix between practical and stop motion, which works on a B-movie level at the very least.

The Blob is a cheesy, lower budget, and sluggishly paced, but nonetheless charming and campy B-level horror movie.
