I had definitely heard about Aggro Dr1ft, I knew that it was a movie that was shot completely infrared. I also knew that it was the latest movie from Harmony Korine, and I was initially sceptical since I wasn’t really into the one movie I saw from him, The Beach Bum. Still, I gave Aggro Dr1ft a chance and while I’m not sure that I would call it a good movie, I am glad I saw it nonetheless.

This movie certainly feels unique from its tone to its presentation, and it is almost like a fever dream. There is only a plot in the broadest sense: an assassin is hired to kill someone, and this movie stretches that concept out while not much actually happens. It is definitely silly with many of the things that are presented on screen, and with the nonsense dialogue that is almost deliberately repeated. It almost feels like it’s aiming to be alienating to the audience, and as such there is a confusion over the intention of the movie: is it being deliberately off putting and a joke, or Korine actually going for something here? I will say that for the first act, I liked the vibes, and the concept was somewhat interesting. After the first 30 minutes however, I think it outlived its welcome. The movie amounts to nothing and gets boring very fast.

To Harmony Korine’s credit, you won’t see another movie that looks like this. Having a movie appear entirely with thermal optics was an interesting visual concept, and I surprisingly got used to the cinematography and psychedelic colours. The visuals and images and vibes could even be dreamlike, helped by the great synth score. That being said, I couldn’t imagine watching it in the cinema.

Aggro Dr1ft is a bizarre, dreamlike, trippy, and unique experimental film with infrared visuals and psychedelic vibes. It doesn’t entirely work, but was interesting to watch. It is hard to really recommend the movie to anyone, all I have to say is that if you look at the still images from the movie and remain curious, then I think it’s worth checking out.
