The Untouchables is one of Brian De Palma’s most known and popular movies, and rewatching it, it is easy to see why.

The Untouchables is a crime drama thriller based on the true events of cops hunting down Al Capone. Even without knowing too much about the real life story, one can probably easily gauge that its not that accurate to what happened, however it’s quite easy to overlook all that. It’s pulpy, larger than life and doesn’t take itself too seriously, and as such was quite entertaining, while having some melodramatic moments. It also benefits from a good pace and a cast of likable characters.

The ensemble cast is also stellar. Kevin Costner is solid in the lead role, but it’s Sean Connery who stands out, delivering one of his best performances and the two actors play off each other really well. The rest of the supporting cast are good, including Andy Garcia, Patricia Clarkson, and especially a scene-stealing Robert De Niro as Al Capone.

The Untouchables is a very well crafted movie, helped by Brian De Palma’s sleek direction. It’s very well shot, and makes good use of locations. The action sequences are also fantastic, with a highlight being a shootout taking place in a train station. Finally, it’s accompanied by an excellent score from Ennio Morricone.

The Untouchables is a highly entertaining crime thriller, excellently directed by Brian de Palma, and with a cast of phenomenal performances.
