I watched EO after years of only knowing that it was a movie about a donkey, it was pretty good.

This movie takes a unique approach, with it being about humanity but captured from the perspective of a donkey (or at least we experience it alongside him). It goes in unexpected directions, has minimal dialogue, and I was interested to see where it goes at the very least, even if I wasn’t that drawn into the plot. It is largely focussing on EO going from one place to another and some parts are more interesting than others. It’s not for everyone, on one hand the slow and aimless story could turn some people off, but also it’s very much a picture about animal abuse, even if we don’t see recreations of animal abuse on screen. So definitely not the easiest movie to watch.

Jerzy Skolimowski’s direction is very strong. It’s beautifully shot and makes great use of colour, lighting and composition, even some drone shots, and the haunting score is very fitting.

EO is not consistently engaging, but is empathetic, haunting, excellently directed and visually gorgeous.
