I saw G20 advertised, and it really looked like a straight to streaming generic action thriller. One day though, I decided to check it out; it wasn’t that good but was entertaining for what it was.

The plot is very simple: hostages are taken by terrorists, and one person has to save the day. Except this time, it has to be the president of the United States, just like Air Force One (except its Viola Davis instead of Harrison Ford). It is very cliched with very little surprises, there was even a small twist/reveal that happened in the third act that I was somehow able to call in the first act as a random guess. It does try to be a politically timely movie with deepfake AI, Bitcoin and crypto playing notable parts in the plot, but doesn’t really end up saying that much and doesn’t commit to anything. The biggest problem is that the movie is just rather forgettable. However, once the action begins, it is paced fine enough. Also, while it does generally play things seriously, there’s a lot of the movie that’s enjoyably silly and trashy.

Viola Davis plays the lead role of the president and as usual is good. While the movie isn’t anything special, Davis helps to keep you engaged enough with what’s happening, and she definitely plays the action really well. Antony Starr plays the villain and while he’s not great, he is still very entertaining to watch and adds enough to keep his character slightly above the level of a generic action villain. The rest of the cast are decent enough.

The direction from Patricia Riggen is nothing special, but is competent enough. While the action scenes don’t really stand out and aren’t memorable, they are entertaining to watch.

G20 is a very generic and cliched but entertaining enough action thriller. The action is enjoyable and Viola Davis and Antony Starr are solid.
