I heard some great things about Sorry, Baby, but I didn’t really know what it was about before going in. It ended up being among my favourites of the year.

Told in a somewhat non-linear fashion, Sorry, Baby is a sensitively handled portrait of an assault survivor, and does seem to have an authentic and emotionally honest approach to the subject matter. It has quite a good tonal balance and control; it’s powerful, sincere, and with emotional weight, while also mixing well with deadpan comedy which not only fits but helps to feel more human.

In the lead role, Eva Victor delivers an effectively understated and emotional performance. Naomi Ackie, Louis Cancelmi, Kelly McCormack and Lucas Hedges are really good in their parts too, and John Carroll Lynch also has a particularly great scene.

This is Eva Victor’s directorial debut and it’s really good as a first film. It’s beautifully shot and the editing is particularly effective.

Sorry, Baby is emotionally powerful, empathetic, and honest. It’s wonderfully written, directed and performed, and an incredible debut from Eva Victor. One of my favourites of the year.
