I went into Brewster McCloud not knowing anything about it beyond the fact that it was directed by Robert Altman and starred Shelley Duvall, it turned out to be such a wild and surprising experience.

Brewster McCloud is narratively messy, but experimental and takes such big swings that I ended up really respecting it. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going in, and I won’t go into too much depth here. I can say that it is deranged, creative, wacky and absurd to the point that I was constantly on board so I could see what crazy thing would happen next, much of this movie has to be seen to be believed. It is hilarious with a lot of dark comedy, while also having quite a bit of social commentary and satire.

There’s a really good ensemble cast who all deliver eccentric performances, with Bud Cort, Michael Murphy, and Margaret Hamilton, and especially Shelley Duvall as the standout.

Robert Altman directed this with such energy and unique style, from the camerawork to especially the editing.

Although it isn’t for everyone, Brewster McCloud is a wonderfully absurd, chaotic and unhinged comedy.
