It’s a Wonderful Life is a movie that I have been wanting to check out for quite a while, with it being an acclaimed and beloved classic (and Christmas classic). I kept meaning to watch it around Christmas time, but never have. I finally got around to watch it when it was shown at the cinema and it definitely lived up to all the hype.

Much of the movie is just following the life of protagonist George Bailey, and it surprised me how long it took for the central advertised premise to come up in the plot. It’s a hopeful and life affirming movie full of heart, humanity and empathy about finding happiness and the importance of community. It’s so sentimental for much of the story that it was surprising when it took on some dark material in parts including suicide, and I think it generally handles its subjects well.

Jimmy Stewart’s performance of George Bailey is amazing and he conveys his character so excellently, one of his very best. Other supporting performances including from Henry Travers are also really good.

Frank Capra’s direction is top notch. The black and white cinematography is stunning, with great uses of lighting, shadows and depth.

It’s a Wonderful Life is a hopeful, heartfelt and timeless classic.
