Clash of the Titans is a 2010s fantasy adventure blockbuster that received a largely negative response, but I enjoyed it. While its sequel Wrath of the Titans is around the same level, it is a small step up in quality at least.

Like its predecessor, Wrath of the Titans has a fairly generic and weak story. Its approach to the story did somewhat work in its favour however. It places more emphasis and focus on the action, the plot is a little tighter which works for this sort of movie, and does allow for a much faster pace. There is probably even less character development than in the first movie, but that movie didn’t have a lot of it to begin with.

Sam Worthington reprises his role as Perseus, and while he remains a generic protagonist, I actually think he works much better here than in the last movie. Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes return as Zeus and Hades and are among the highlights here. I like how the movie gives them a bit more to work with here, with their relationship being more focused on, and was probably the most interesting part of the movie. There are also some recognisable actors with Rosamund Pike, Toby Kebbell and Bill Nighy who are good in their parts. Édgar Ramírez as Ares was the weak link for me, he didn’t really feel much like the god of war in the way that Neeson and Fiennes felt like their godly characters.

Jonathan Liebesman’s direction is fine enough, it does help convey the spectacle at the very least. The action is on a much larger scale and is enjoyable to watch. It does feel like even more CGI is on screen compared to Clash of the Titans. While some of the effects can be dodgy, on the whole, they are an improvement.

Like its predecessor, Wrath of the Titans is a flawed fantasy action adventure, but overall, is an improvement. It’s entertaining and enjoyable, particularly with the action and the cast.
