The Jack Ryan tv series starring John Krasinski was fine enough for what it is, an above average, predictable and entertaining action thriller series. After its final season, there’s now a follow up in the form of a movie titled Ghost War. If you enjoyed the show, you’ll probably get some enjoyment out of this, but it’s probably the weakest entry in this Krasinski Jack Ryan series, and the worst of all the Jack Ryan movies.

Ghost War follows on from the continuity of the tv show, but you could still watch it as its own movie. You’d be missing out on the history between a few returning main characters, but you can easily just follow along with it. The plots for the Jack Ryan show felt like they easily could’ve been translated to the movie format, but evidently they don’t do nearly as well, because Ghost War the least invested I’ve been in a John Krasinski Jack Ryan story. The plot is very forgettable and unengaging, rushed too. The espionage and spy elements which were present in the tv show take far more of a back seat in the movie. It really only comes alive during the above average action, which wasn’t even great in itself. It really only felt that this movie only exists to exist as another entry, and they weren’t able to do it as another season of the show.

John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly reprise their roles from the series, and there’s also the addition of Sienna Miller. The cast play their parts fine enough.

Andrew Bernstein is the director, who has previously directed some TV episodes. Ghost War certainly does look like a TV movie and feels in line with the show it’s continuing off from. As a standard action thriller, it works reasonably well. The visuals aren’t particularly interesting but the action is filmed fine enough with good stunt work, even if it is fairly mindless and lacks really any actual tension.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War is a very generic and forgettable, but functional and competent enough action thriller.
