I was interested in Mutiny. It’s another Jason Statham action flick and I generally enjoy his movies. But it’s also from the director of Plane, which was a surprisingly enjoyable action movie, so I had some decent expectations for it. I had fun with Mutiny, but I expected more from it.

The script is pretty thin, with bare bones characterisation, and it almost feels like a first draft. The first act is a basic setup for getting Jason Statham onto the boat, and everything throughout the movie felt so generic. Overall, Mutiny is pretty formulaic and forgettable, and you’ll mainly be able to remember it as “the Statham movie where he’s on a boat”. The amount of action is quite limited too, mainly opting to have a steady build in tension. I can get on board with that, it’s just that I don’t think it was all that great or effectively suspenseful, and the movie was at its best during its action scenes. At least it doesn’t overstay itself it’s welcome, with a runtime of around 90 minutes.

Jason Statham is reliably solid, he does his usual action and stunts and there isn’t much character stuff with him, but that’s to be expected. Annabelle Wallis is pretty good, she was given a bit more to do than I was expecting considering the thankless role that she’s given.

The direction from Jean-François Richet is decent on the whole. The cargo ship setting is solid, I liked the use of the tight spaces of the ship for the environment. The movie shines the most in the action. It’s well shot and edited, with good choreography, and is effectively brutal. I just wished that we got more of these set pieces.

Mutiny isn’t a very engaging thriller, but it’s watchable, decently directed, and Jason Statham and the action deliver at the very least.
