I knew of Sense and Sensibility as being based on the Jane Austin novel of the same name (which I wasn’t familiar with), directed by Ang Lee and starring recognisable actors like Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. Aside from that. I didn’t know much about it going in, and I ended up really liking it.

The script from Emma Thompson is amazing, and it made for a really good romantic period piece. It was emotionally compelling and sentimental, but also with bits of humour mainly within awkward situations.

The ensemble cast is top notch. Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were the standouts, and Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Hugh Laurie were great too.

It’s directed very well by Ang Lee, appropriately restrained and fitting a period piece; The cinematography is stunning, as were the sets and costumes.

Sense and Sensibility is an excellently written, directed and performed period drama.
