I remember watching and enjoying the 2010 Clash of the Titans movie, but it received a lot of negative reception at the time. I decided to revisit it, and while I wouldn’t call it a good movie, I still enjoyed it.

Clash of the Titans is eager to shove in so much mythology and so many creatures in a movie with an hour and 50 minute runtime, that it feels overstuffed and rushed. It probably needed another 30 minutes to flesh things out more, especially the characters. Still, the swift runtime kept things going and I can’t deny that I was generally entertained throughout as a relatively fun adventure movie.

Sam Worthington is a good actor, but as Perseus in this movie, he’s relegated to being a very standard fantasy adventure blockbuster protagonist here. He’s not bad, just generic. The supporting cast shines a bit more, even if the material they were given wasn’t great either without much character development. There are plenty of recognisable actors here like Gemma Arteton, Nicholas Hoult, Rory McCann and Luke Evans. Mads Mikkelson and Liam Cunningham stand out as members of Worthington’s group, and Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes as Zeus and Hades also make the most of their screentime.

Louis Letterier is a decent director, though his work here is a mixed bag. I liked practical work, and the costumes and the production designs are pretty good. However, the visual effects can be a little messy, occasionally reminiscent of CGI from the 2000s. The above average action is held back by the frantic editing. They aren’t incomprehensible or anything, but it definitely prevents it from being as good as it could’ve been, especially considering that Letterier is a solid action director, based on his past work.

Clash of the Titans is a very flawed fantasy adventure, but still manages to be entertaining in parts. As a 2010 blockbuster, it is watchable and fine.
